Representative emphasizes international law and mutual prosperity in maritime boundary talks with Thailand.
PHNOM PENH —Cambodia has officially presented its opening statement at the first meeting of the Conciliation Commission, marking a significant diplomatic step in resolving long-standing maritime boundary disputes with Thailand. Representing the Royal Government, the Cambodian agent expressed gratitude to the Commission and the Permanent Court of Arbitration for facilitating this compulsory conciliation process under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The statement highlighted Cambodia’s commitment to a peaceful, law-based resolution following the unilateral cancellation of the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding in May 2026. Cambodia seeks either a comprehensive maritime boundary treaty or a joint development agreement to equitably manage underwater energy resources, which remain untapped despite pressing global energy demands and the need for regional economic growth.
Citing Prime Minister Hun Manet, the delegation underscored that a fair settlement would safeguard sovereignty, strengthen bilateral trust, and foster regional stability. Drawing inspiration from the successful Timor-Leste and Australia conciliation, Cambodia remains optimistic that this multilateral framework will provide a sustainable path forward, securing economic opportunities for the future generations of both nations.
