PHNOM PENH —The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) has officially documented 501 impact locations within the vicinity of the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to CMAC Director General Heng Ratana, the findings include remnants of MK82 aerial bombs alongside 155mm and 105mm artillery shells. Reports indicate that at least three projectiles landed in immediate proximity to the historic temple structure.

Mr. Ratana highlighted the severe technical implications of these munitions, noting that the blast radius and atmospheric shockwaves from such heavy ordnance can extend between 500 and 1,000 meters. These high-intensity vibrations pose a significant threat to the structural stability of the 11th-century monument, which has historically been situated within a zone of regional border sensitivity.

The ongoing clearance and documentation efforts by CMAC underscore Cambodia’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while ensuring the safety of the surrounding landscape.
